Emulsion-Free Caustic Treatment of Jet Fuel—Practical, Reliable, Economical

January 11, 2020

Jet fuel has to meet stringent international specifications, requiring a complex, multi-step treatment process to remove acids and mercaptans. Due to excessive emulsion formation, the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa Ltd. was not able to achieve its desired jet fuel production rate. The company replaced its failed treating unit with a Merichem®-designed NAPFINING treating system with the FIBER FILM® Contactor technology. The system reduced the jet fuel acidity and eliminated emulsion formation, allowing the downstream sweetening system to sustain long periods of operation without shutdown for emulsion removal.
