RESPONSIBLE CARE

Merichem is a member of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and proudly participates in Responsible Care®. Responsible Care® is a global initiative that is practiced currently in 53 countries, which share a common commitment to advancing the safe and secure management of chemical products and processes.

We have made a CEO-level commitment to uphold Responsible Care® principles at our chemical manufacturing facility. We are committed to:

  • Measuring and publicly reporting performance
  • Implementing the Responsible Care® Security Code
  • Applying the modern Responsible Care® management system to achieve and verify results
  • Obtaining independent certification that a management system is in place and functions according to professional standards.

The ACC’s Responsible Care® initiative requires that companies implement a Responsible Care Management System® (RCMS®).The RCMS® assures continuous improvement in environmental, health, safety, and security performance. With RCMS®, an external third party registrar audits and grants certification to management systems designed and operated within the 30 elements of the ACC RCMS® Technical Specification standard. Merichem achieved initial third-party verification of our RCMS® in 2006, and it was recently recommended for recertification by third-party auditors in 2013. The foundation of Merichem’s RCMS® is our Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Policy. We continually strive to uphold our Policy by considering the impact of our activities on the environment, health, safety and security of our facilities and surrounding communities. Merichem has implemented a risk characterization process to categorize our products with regard to exposure and hazard potential then prioritized these products for risk management activities. These three products are considered High Priority for which we have publically available Product Stewardship Summaries:

Our commitment to Responsible Care® is evident in the recent installation of floating roof tanks at our terminal in Houston TX which minimizes our air emissions. In addition, we have committed to responsible transportation of our materials via barge. We recently added five new barges to our fleet. These new barges are state of the art, and replaced seven barges that were of an older design. Merichem is committed to updating our entire fleet over the next five years.
