Facts About Copper Naphthenate
Product Description:
Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC (MCRS) CuNap-8™ Wood Preservative is an oil soluble wood preservative. The concentrate is 8% copper for blending with P-9 solvent.
Color:
Wood freshly treated with copper naphthenate ranges from olive to dark green or brown depending on the wood species and the treating process. Copper naphthenate treated wood loses its green tint after several months of exposure to sunlight.
Technical Data:
Stake
Tests
Stake tests have demonstrated that copper naphthenate
provides years of extended service life. Tests were conducted by the
U.S. government and university laboratories at sites throughout the country.
Standards
MCRS CuNap-8™ Wood Preservative complies with
American Wood Preservers Association (AWPA) Standard P8-98 for Oil-borne
Preservatives and Canadian Standards. AWPA P8 excludes the use of less effective
synthetic carboxylic acids in the manufacture of copper naphthenate and requires
the naphthenic acid used in the preservative to have an acid number in the
range of 180 to 250.
All MCRS processes comply with ISO 9001:2000 Standards.
Retentions
There are major regional differences in the potential for deterioration of
wood as shown in the Deterioration Zone map. In some cases multiple retentions
are shown in the AWPA Standard, so users may address variances in potential
deterioration in their area.
The higher retention levels should be specified when poles are installed in the higher deterioration zones, as shown in the following map.
