Western Gas Resources, A Leading Gatherer Of Natural Gas, Installed a LO CAT® System
Schaumburg, IL — A LO CAT® system has been installed at the Western Gas treating plant in Cayuga, Texas. The system, engineered by Gas Technology Products, treats hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions from an existing Claus unit — the first LO CAT unit of its kind to treat tail gas emissions.
The system highlights the flexibility of the LO CAT technology, which in this case was designed for a dual purpose. First, as the primary sulfur removal technology to treat acid gas from the amine unit. Second, after production increased, and a Claus unit was installed to remove the major portion of the sulfur, to treat the tailgas from the Claus unit.
Western Gas made the decision to use the LO CAT system because of its ease of operation and flexibility. The LO CAT system can easily handle variations in gas composition, which was important as the plant started up. The process also has excellent turndown capabilities, so a fairly large unit could be built initially which could treat the much lower start-up quantities of gas.
The process does not use any toxic chemicals and does not produce any hazardous waste byproducts. The environmentally safe catalyst is continuously regenerated in the process, resulting in lower operating costs. In addition, the LO CAT technology, listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as a maximum achievable control technology (MACT), can be designed for better than 99.9% H2S removal efficiency.
