ETHYLENE CAUSTIC

With the cracking of liquid hydrocarbons to produce ethylene there becomes a need for acid gas removal (H2S and CO2) and effluent caustic treatment. Merichem provides both technology and service solutions. Merichem’s LO CAT® technology has proven to be highly effective in removing H2S from acid gas. The first application of the LO CAT® technology specifically treating acid gas was started up in the United States in 1981. The success of the LO CAT® technology in treating CO2 rich acid gas has lead to more than 90 acid gas treatment installations worldwide: Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, and North America. The first application of the LO CAT® technology at an Ethylene production facility was in 1993.

Impurities found in spent caustic streams generated during the production of ethylene can be toxic and, therefore, require oxidation and neutralization or neutralization and stripping to achieve BOD/COD reduction, odor control and/or pH adjustment, prior to being released to the WWTP. Merichem’s FIBER FILM® technologies have proven to be highly effective in the treatment of (sulfidic, naphthenic, phenolic, cresylic, and mixed) caustic streams. On-site oxidation and/or acid neutralization for BOD/COD reduction, odor control and/or pH adjustment can be achieved with either our MERICON™ process. Alternatively, Merichem’s advanced logistics system allows us to transport caustic solutions to our chemical plants and terminals in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner; where they are utilized in a non-waste, environmentally responsible, manner.
