Merichem provides both service and technology solutions to Asphalt refiners; with our customized chemical product formulations and our innovative technologies.

The superior performance of Venezuelan asphalt is often thought to be related to the presence and structure of naphthenic acids. Naphthenic acids, metal naphthenates, and derivatives such as imidazolines promote adhesion of asphalt binder to aggregate. Sodium or potassium naphthenate solutions act as emulsifiers for aqueous dispersions of asphalt.

Control of emissions in asphalt manufacturing has historically focused on particulate emissions. However the past decade has seen increased control of sulfur compounds from the exhaust gas produced during asphalt manufacturing. The first application of the LO-CAT® technology at an asphalt refinery was started up in 1991.
