Merichem Company is a privately owned holding company with over 60 years experience in the specialty chemical business. Since 1945, Merichem Company has served the worldwide refining and chemical industries by acquiring refinery phenolic caustic solutions and processing them into high purity phenol and cresylic acids in an environmentally sound manner at its plant in Houston, Texas, USA. Refinery sulfide solutions are purchased, processed and marketed through the caustic services business of Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC (MCRS), a wholly owned subsidiary.

In 1974, Merichem formed the process technology business to supply its proprietary processing technology and equipment to the refining and chemical industries worldwide, including in such countries as Japan, China, Russia, Colombia, Mexico and Argentina.

In 1983, Merichem added a second chemical processing plant located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA, for manufacturing naphthenic acids utilizing refinery caustic solutions. Merichem is the world’s largest producer of a full spectrum of naphthenic acids, from the highly refined grades used in paint driers and tire cord adhesion promoters, to grades used in wood preservatives, corrosion inhibitors and other products.

Our most recent technological advance is the production of copper naphthenate wood preservative. This preservative is used in the treatment of utility poles, sign posts, pilings and beams, railroad crossties as well as for remedial treatment.

Effective July 1, 2001, Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC acquired the Gas Technology Products business of US Filter, a Vivendi company. Gas Technology Products (GTP), headquartered in Schaumburg, IL, is a leader in its field of sulfur removal systems.

In 1997, an alliance was formed between the two companies to maintain production of GTP's high-quality ARI family of catalysts used in Merichem's processes. This synergy allows for optimized mercaptan oxidation processes and reduced operating costs.

Now, as an integral part of Merichem’s family, GTP provides a broad line of desulfurization technologies to sweeten gas and air streams containing most levels of hydrogen sulfide or mercaptans. GTP has over 25 years of proven performance in hydrogen sulfide removal with the LO-CAT® and LO-CAT II® processes, and recently expanded its technology offerings to include Sulfur-Rite® and THE ELIMINATOR™. Other applications include odor control systems, chelating agents, CO2 purification, enhanced oil recovery, and other purification technologies.

Merichem Company maintains a Research, Development and Engineering Center in Houston, Texas, USA, for the development of specialty chemicals and process technologies. Our team of chemical experts is constantly monitoring and improving products for customers through technology, and development of new products and processes.

Merichem’s products are marketed worldwide. Merichem Japan, Ltd., is located in Tokyo, Japan, and markets industrial chemicals and process technology in Asia.

In 1997, Merichem Company structured its operations into two subsidiary operating companies: Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC (MCRS) and the Merisol Joint Venture.

Merisol USA LLC manufactures phenolic products, including phenol, cresols, cresylic acids and their derivatives.
