John T. Files & associates purchased a small chemical company (M&M Chemicals)
1947
Filed the papers to officially change company name to Merichem Company
1948
Merichem bought a plant to produce cresylic acids and sodium sulfides near the Houston Ship Channel
1957
Merged with Jefferson Lake Sulfur Company (in 1963 Occidental Petroleum acquired Jefferson Lake)
1965
John T. Files and Merichem employees bought back the cresylic acid and sodium sulfide plants from Occidental, which established a new Merichem Company
1970
Operations and production of cresylic acids are doubled as an outlet for co-products and a dependable environmental service company supported by the refining companies
1972
Merichem purchased its first barge of new barge fleet
1974
Merichem formed Process Technology Division (PTD)
1975
Merichem developed a patented FIBER-FILM® extraction process, resulting in 500 licensed fuels purification units in 40 countries
1976
John T. Files Technical Center in Houston, TX was acquired for research in order to develop new products and processes
1979
Became world leader of pure cresols and domestic producer of cresylic acid
1983
Purchased chemical processing plant on Black Warrior River (BWR) in Alabama, to produce high quality naphthenic acid for refinery co-products
1989
Merichem purchased an office and fabrication shop in Houston, TX where it consolidated its PTD engineering, equipment, fabrication and sales businesses
1994
The Board approved a significant capacity increase for high purity cresols in cresylic acid
1997
Restructured Merichem's operating unit by forming Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC (MCRS)
Formed a 50/50 joint venture phenolics business, Merisol with Sasol
2001
MCRS acquired Gas Technology Products (GTP) which serves the natural gas industry
2004
MCRS executed the first of what would become a series of large upstream projects in its PTD division
2005
Research, Development and Engineering executed a reorganization that revitalized its research organization and shifted its focus to new proprietary technologies
2007
Merichem's Board authorized a barge construction program to modernize fleet
2009
MCRS opened office in the People's Republic of China (PRC) in order to serve growing customer base
Today, Merichem is a private, closely-held corporation.
